ABOUT
QUAIL POINT SENIOR MEN’S GOLF CLUB
Quail Point Senior Men’s Golf Club (QPSMGC) welcomes any enthusiastic golfer over the age of 60 to play fun-filled 9-hole tournament golf every Wednesday morning at Quail Point Golf Course, March through October. You must be a member of the OGA, have an official golf handicap index and pay the annual dues of $40. The weekly Wednesday tournament uses a variety of individual and team play formats and the top finishers receive cash prizes. The entry fee is $5.
Wednesday Tournaments
Call the Pro Shop (541-857-7000) to sign up for Wednesday events by 5:00 pm the Monday before. The Pro Shop needs time to arrange the tee sheets and scorecards.
Check in at the Pro Shop at least 20 minutes prior to the start time and receive your scorecard and the pairing/rules sheet.
Everyone, except players over 80 years old, plays from the Gold tees, except when playing the Red, White and Gold format. Players over 80 have the option to play Gold or Red tees and must declare their tee choice when checking in. Players will be allotted to their respective flights and the top finishers in both Gross and Net scores in each flight collect prize money.
There is one Closest to the Pin (KP) side game each week for a separate payout.
Tournament results will be posted on the Quail Point Golf Course web site on the Senior Men’s Club web page.
Pace of Play
Play “Ready Golf” which means THINKING AHEAD so that you're READY TO PLAY when it is YOUR TURN. Simply put, each golfer within the group hits when ready, rather than strictly adhering to the principle that furthest from the hole plays first. Keep up with the group ahead of you.
Posting GHIN Scores
The Pro Shop will post your scores for all Wednesday events into the GHIN system. You must post all your other rounds in order to maintain a current handicap index.
Pick-up games
As one of the benefits of the membership, the Pro Shop reserves a couple of tee-times for the club members on Tuesdays and Fridays throughout the year. No reservations are necessary, just show up with enough advance time to check in at the Pro Shop. Those tee-times are: 9:00 am (April through October) and 1:00 pm (November through March).
Featured Tournaments
Member-Member: Held on May 27th and 28th, this two-day event allows you to form your 2 Man team with another member. Play 2 Man Scramble on Day 1 and 2 Man Best Ball on Day 2. If you elect to enter as single, the Pro Shop will team you up with another member if available. The entry fee is $10.
Match Play: Separate from the Wednesday events, this single-elimination tournament is played in June/July. Sign up before May 30th. The Pro Shop sets the bracket and the play starts in June. The entry fee is $5.
Joint Event with Women’s Club: The annual 4 Person Scramble event with Quail Point Women’s Golf Club will be on June 23. Play will be followed by a lunch (details to be announced). Please note this tournament is played on a Monday.
Nilsson-Newins Club Championship: A two-day event held on September 16th and 17th to crown the Club Champion. The low Gross score overall settles who gets to wear the Green Jacket as the new Club Champion. The rest of the field compete in separate flights and the top finishers in Gross and Net win handsome payouts. The entry fee is $10.
FORMAT NOTES
In all formats, record your Gross score, the Pro Shop will determine your net score.
Individual format
Individual Medal Play: You play your own ball, count all strokes and record your Gross score.
2 Man formats
2 Man Best Ball: The two players play their own golf ball throughout and the lower Net score between them on each hole counts as the team score. Record both players Gross scores.
2 Man Scramble: Each player tees off, the team selects the shot they wish to play, and both players play from that spot (within one club length, no closer to the hole, or on the green within 3 inches), repeating the process until the hole is completed. Each player must “contribute” a minimum of 3 drives. Record your Gross score on each hole.
4 Man formats
4 Man Scramble: Each player tees off, the team selects the shot they wish to play, and each player plays from that spot (within one club length, no closer to the hole, or on the green within 3 inches), repeating the process until the hole is completed. Each player must “contribute” at least one drive. Record your Gross score on each hole.
4 Man Shamble 2 Best Balls: Each player hits a drive and the team selects the best drive. Then you play your own ball from that position into the hole. The 2 best Net scores of the team on each hole count as the team score. Each player must “contribute” at least one drive. Record Gross scores for each player on each hole.
4 Man 2 Best Balls: Each player plays his own ball throughout the round and the 2 low Net scores on each hole count as your team score. Record Gross scores for each player on each hole.
Cha Cha Cha: Best individual score on holes #1, 4, & 7; 2 best scores on holes #2, 5, & 8; 3 best scores on holes #3, 6, & 9. Order of holes may vary. Record your Gross scores for each player on each hole.
Red, White & Gold: (Scramble format) Three holes will be designated by the PRO for play from the Red, White, and Gold tees. The same player cannot contribute more than one drive on each color of tee. Record your Gross score for each hole.

RULES TO REMEMBER
The two governing bodies of golf, USGA and R&A, made the Rules of Golf much more user-friendly in 2019. We should remember those modernized rules to make the game more enjoyable.
But first, let’s recall one rule our Head Pro, Robert, has touched on at a previous club meeting. The subject was Dropping and Measuring Relief Area. If you’re taking free relief from an immovable obstruction, such as sprinkler heads, drains, cart paths or any other man-made object that cannot be moved, your relief area is 1 club-length from the nearest point of relief, no closer to the hole. If it’s penalty relief, like when your ball is sitting next to a natural object and you have no shot, your relief area is 2 club-length. Take one stroke penalty and drop your ball from knee height so that it lands in and comes to rest in the relief area. So, “Robert’s canon” is, 1 club-length for free drop, 2 club-length for penalty drop. Pretty simple.
And if you are entitled to free relief, you should remember another rule. So long as the relief area is within one club-length of the nearest point of relief, no closer to the hole, you are allowed to play from a better condition than your ball currently lies.
Now, Rules of Golf we should remember & play by:
Changing Balls When Taking Relief ● You are allowed to switch to another ball when taking either free relief or penalty relief.
Moved Ball During Search ● If you move the ball while searching for it, there is no penalty. Just replace the ball.
Embedded Ball ● You get free relief if your ball is embedded anywhere in the general Area (previously known as “through the green”), whether in the fairway or in the rough, except when embedded in sand.
In Bunkers ● You can touch the sand with your club or hand without penalty, so long as you’re not purposely attempting to test the sand. However, you still cannot touch the sand with a club making practice swings, in grounding the club right in front or behind the ball, or in making the backswing for a stroke.
More rules to remember…
In Penalty Areas (think Water Hazards) ● Penalty areas are marked by either red or yellow stakes. You are allowed to ground your club, take practice swings, touch water, and remove loose impediments.
Double Hits ● Even if your club accidently hits the ball twice, there is no penalty. Count it as one stroke and play it as it lies.
Casual Water ● If your ball lies in the fairway or in the rough and water squishes up to the surface when you take a stance, you may pick the ball up, clean it, and then drop it at the nearest point without casual water that’s no nearer the hole, without penalty.
